Reconstruction of maasai mara roads gets underway

The reconstruction of roads leading into the world famous Maasai Mara game reserve has begun ahead of the tourist’s high season in July. The works involve reconstruction of the main trunk roads, grading, drainage, gravelling and laying of culverts.

The reconstruction works is being done by the Ministry of Roads and Public Works and the Narok County Council which is the trustee of the park. The Ministry is working on the main trunk roads to the Mara while the Council is focusing on the roads around and within the park.

So far, the Council has completed 37 km of the 160km roadways with the remaining expected to be covered by June 2007. Three bridges along the Narok-Sekenani road which had been washed away by torrential rains early in the year have been reconstructed. They include the Ngamia, Ngoilale and Kishermuroak bridges. Spot patching on critical sections is going on simultaneously to ensure accessibility during the long rains.
