KWS seeks to raise the number of Black Rhinos by 2011 in Kenya

Kenya has unveiled a new national strategy to increase the number of the endangered rhino in the next five years from the current 540 to 700 by 2011. The strategy is part of a bigger plan to raise the number of rhinos in Kenya to 2000 in the next 25 years after they were nearly wiped out by poachers in the 1970s and 80s. KWS also recognizes the role that southern white rhino imported from South Africa play in Kenya's wildlife tourism and education and its importance to the conservation of the indigenous eastern black rhino. White rhinos would be introduced in community areas to boost tourism because they are easier to see than the black rhino.

Important: VAT in Kenya now due on transport of tourists

The 2008/2009 Kenya budget was Gazetted last week and with immediate effect removes the exemption from VAT previously given to transport of tourists.
This means that VAT (16%) is now payable on the 'transport component' of all MARA 2008 related travel (other components were already VAT rated).
To minimise costs to you as far as possible we will be collecting this local TAX in cash through the registration desk on arrival at MARA 2008 (no card, cheque or bank fees). This will be in $US and we would appreciate close to the correct amount - which we will advise in due course. Any delegate with a credit due to them may advise us to apply that credit to this TAX payment which we will do at 100% rather than the 97.5% credit otherwise available.
