On behalf of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa, the Local Organizing Committee at North-West University and Natural Events we wish to invite Zoologists, in their professional, management and training capacities, to join us in Potchefstroom for the 33rd meeting of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa.

The theme of the meeting is:
The sixth extinction - conserving zoological biodiversity.

Some aspects that can (should?) be addressed under this theme include:

  • The South African Biodiversity Act - implications, opportunities etc.
  • Biodiversity in agro-ecosystems, industrial systems, urban systems etc.
  • Ecotoxicology and biodiversity
  • Threats and conservation of specific taxa (avifauna, Lepidoptera etc.)
  • Vital soil and ecological stress
  • The role of captive breeding and culture in reversing biodiversity loss
  • Extinctions / displacements in the SA context (including invasive alien species)
  • Financial impact of biodiversity loss
  • Adaptation (genetic, physiological etc.) of animals to environments - effects of change (e.g. global warming)
  • Biomarkers / indicators of environmental change
  • Information transfer and training
  • Adaptation to environment
  • Subterranean ecosystems
  • Understanding the past and predicting the future: a genetic approach

The organizers invite proposals for specific sessions to address these, and other, themes during the conference.
